History of the Caldwell Library
The Caldwell Library was established as a reading room contaning resources collected by the staff of the Demography Program. These were notably the publications of the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Over the years the library evolved into it's current form with donations by staff and students and subscriptions to the major journals of the discipline.
On the 30th July 1998 the Demography Program Library was re-named the Caldwell Library in honour of the work of the former head of the Demography Program.
At the beginning of 2008 a major change took place in the library. Professor Caldwell donated his personal demographic collection to the library. This made it necessary to remove most of the working paper collection to find enough space to house the collection. These books are still being catalogued.
The library currently holds a collection of over 700 books, 170 conference and meeting collections, 500 United Nations publications, Australian Census collections since 1911, selected Australian Bureau of Statistics publications, and statistical collections from many countries of Asia, Africa and the Pacific.
